Karkhana is a social enterprise that designs hands-on learning experiences for students inside regular classrooms. Our work focuses on building scientific thinking, curiosity, and a culture of experimentation in children.

The Karkhana Science Program helps schools turn regular science classrooms into labs of discovery. It makes science meaningful and doable for every child. This is not an extracurricular or co curricular program. It is fully aligned with Nepal’s national curriculum: Hamro Serofero for Grades 1 to 3 and CDC Science Curriculum for Grades 4 to 9. The program focuses on scientific concepts, skills, and practices expected by the national curriculum.

  1. Science Stories and Characters That Grow With Students, thoughtfully designed in collaboration with students of KUSOA and stories written by children book author Anuradha Sharma. These characters grow in age, curiosity, and ambition alongside the children, acting as companions who ask questions, explore ideas, and model scientific thinking.
  2. Karkhana Science Teacher’s Virtual College, a program designed with and supported by KUSOED for Karkhana science teachers to empower and support them on a regular basis. 
  3. Student Practical Assessment Framework for 50 marks of assessment
  4. Weekly/Bi-weekly/Monthly school visit for teacher support and program monitoring

Karkhana Science Mobile App for Teachers

No. Karkhana team members do not come to teach students directly.

The program is implemented by the school’s own science teachers.Karkhana supports teachers by providing learning materials, training, digital resources, and continuous guidance throughout the year.

Karkhana has a comprehensive teacher training curriculum(Science Teacher Empowerment Curriculum) designed with and supported by KUSOED which includes:

  • 4 hours in person KS teachers onboarding training initially.
  • Weekly/biweekly/monthly virtual classes(30-40 minutes) for teachers
  • Karkhana Science Mobile App for Teachers
  • Mentorship and sharing in 600+ science teachers community all over Nepal
  • Two Classroom learning observation of teachers by Karkhana team
  • Regional events/summit/conference for KS teachers. 
  • Teacher Certification after program completion

There are 14-16 lessons designed in each grade that includes 28+ activities for each grade.

  • Many of the activities can be used (2-3) times in a year while some are consumable.

Each activity typically takes around 40-60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the topic.

No, Karkhana activities do not require labs, maker space or any extra space. Karkhana activities are designed to be conducted within a regular classroom setting.

Yes, to support schools in such times of difficulties Karkhana provides orientation and training for new teachers free of cost to ensure continuity in program delivery.

Karkhana offers a flexible program module with respect to your cost affordability & desired experience for teachers and students: 

  1. KS Premium Program: Maximum impact with dedicated materials, strongest teacher support, year-round monitoring, and high student engagement. 
  2. KS Shared Program: Balanced value with shared kits (2-3 students). A practical choice for impactful learning at a controlled cost. 
  3. KS Budget Program: Affordable entry into hands-on learning with shared kits (4-7 students). Best for schools seeking cost-effective science exposure. It is especially designed for public and low cost private/community schools.

For first time implementation, we recommend starting with two to three grades, ideally between Grades 4 and 7. This age group adapts well to hands-on experimentation and inquiry based learning.
