Empowering Nepali Children Through Hands-On Science Learning.
Purpose drives us towards a mission. A purpose, often times known as a value carries a great significance in every organization’s origin. The question of Why? Is a purpose and that very Why? For Karkhana is to nurture a spirit of innovating locally to place a global impact: empowering people with similar skills & attitudes that will eventually help them build their future, and primarily, the future of their community.
Established in 2012, by aspiring engineers, Karkhana has stood with their Why? since its initiation. Discovering the challenges faced in implementing suitable methodologies for STEAM learning, Karkhana’s primary mission has ever since been to reimagine the learning process in classrooms. The Science program we offer throughout Grade 1-9 is specifically inclined to the Curriculum of Nepal.t makes it academically sufficient along with fulfilling our objective of “making” today’s children.
With Why’s comes How’s. Our How’s become possible thanks to our communities who have been consistently implementing and testing models to align with our primary mission. One such model is an iteration cycle called the TMPI model (Think, Make, Play, Improve). A brief explanation to the model would be that a student ideates a certain project, builds it from scratch, tests it, and finally amends the flaws.
Our team includes engineers, designers, artists and scientists who develop a kit that includes materials that fit in with the subjects as mentioned in our “Karkhana Workbook.” This brings out a tangible approach to STEAM learning, ensuring that every child can self-learn. Further, our Community Of Teachers team develop plans to train tutors such that they implement the learning methodologies in their lectures too.
STEAM is a widespread learning approach that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics in a common place. Students tend to get burnt out by the theoretical aspects of STEAM, which results in their loss of interest in the subject. The core ideology within Karkhana’s aspirations is to make sure that Nepali children are using skills they learn in their daily life to become a problem solver and a critical thinker. As we embark on a journey towards fulfilling the Why? we stand by the statement that has driven us in believing that “Makers today are Shapers of tomorrow.”
