Let’s Make Da Vinci Bridge

 

Ever wondered how to make a Da Vinci bridge? Making a Da Vinci Bridge is a fun craft project and also an educational science experiment that can be done at home. So let us begin and make this homestay fun and productive.

Materials required:

  • Icecream Sticks
  • Color pencils

 

What to do next?

You can follow these simple six steps to make your own  Da Vinci Bridge.

STEP 1:

Lay out 3 sticks as shown in the picture.

 

STEP 2:

Add 1 additional stick on the top as shown.

STEP 3:

Lift the right green stick and insert the red stick from below.

 

STEP 4:

Similarly insert another red stick from below.

 

STEP 5:

Slide one green stick under the two red sticks.

 

STEP 6:

It will look like this.

 

STEP 7:

Lift the rightmost green stick and insert one stick (blue) from below.

STEP 8:

Similarly insert another blue stick from below

STEP 9:

Keep repeating the steps from step 5 to step 8. Your Da Vinci Bridge will look something like this.

  • How long and high bridge can you make?
  • How stable is it? How much weight can it hold?

 

 

Think about it

  1. Once the bridge is completed, test it by pressing down with one or two fingers near the centre of the span. Look for any shaky connections and make sure the pieces are accurately aligned.
  2. Think about how life-sized bridges can be built over rivers and canyons. What strategies would the bridge engineers need to use during the construction?

 

 NOW TIME FOR SOME SCIENCE

At first when the bridge is assembled when there is no additional weight is applied on the bridge, the beams are slightly loose and can slid back and forth due to the low self weight of the wooden poles. But when load is applied on the bridge the central beam is spread throughout the structure which then becomes rigid and the beams are no longer loose. The shear force exerted by the load bends the beams, forcing them to make the beam/poles connections tighten, therefore increasing the stability of the bridge.

However, it would be incorrect to state that the strength of the bridge increases linearly with the size of the applied load. After a certain point the weight will have a negative effect, the bridge passed its yield point and the members started deform.

Thus, this activity teaches kids:

  • Concept of  friction and gravity
